In response to the hate-motivated attack at the University of Waterloo, we are hosting a drop-in community support session for any McMaster staff, faculty, students, and alumni who are feeling impacted or distressed.
Anyone is welcome to come, however we will be prioritizing holding space in conversation for Two-spirit, trans, gender diverse, and gender questioning community members, as well as those enrolled in or teaching gender studies and similar courses.
Teaching and learning should never be a life-threatening activity, and yet it has been life-threatening and life-ending for the last several decades in schools, universities, and colleges across Turtle Island. This attack is another reminder of this unfortunate truth, and of the gender-based discrepancies in who gets hurt. In moments that shake our sense of safety in our spaces of work and study, we come together as a community to hold space for one another and be reminded that we are not alone.
In order to protect the safety and privacy of all attendees, the location will be shared with registrants the day before the event. We ask you not to share this location with anyone not registered.
This event is co-facilitated by the Gender & Social Justice Program, the Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office, and the Student Wellness Centre.
