The module will take approximately 45-60 minutes to complete.

We encourage students to complete the module before classes begin. There is a soft deadline of September 30, 2023. Those enrolled in the course are able to complete it at any time during the academic year.

You can un-enroll in this course, no questions asked, by logging into Mosaic, navigating to the Enroll tab in the Student Center, and selecting Drop. Select “CONSENT 1A00” (undergraduate students) or “SGS 202” (graduate students) and confirm.

There are no repercussions for those who don’t complete the module. It is not mandatory to complete.

The module covers introductory information and statistics about sexual violence, consent, bystander intervention, and supporting survivors.

To ensure awareness and encourage completion of the module, all incoming undergraduate and graduate students to McMaster for the 2023-24 academic year have been automatically enrolled in the module.

Gender-based and sexual violence impacts all of us—we might experience it ourselves, or someone close to us might experience it. Whether we know it or not, we all have survivors in our lives. Another reason it’s important for everyone to have these conversations is so that we’re able to identify gender-based and sexual violence in all its forms—online, in person, verbal, physical. When we can identify this violence and disrupt it earlier, we minimize the harm it causes to our community.

Having these conversations can be difficult. Though we know that it takes all of us to create a campus free from gender-based and sexual violence, the module is optional to give space for those who feel that completing the course could cause distress.

We encourage you to take care of yourself however you see fit, including pausing the module and resuming later or connecting with us or connecting with additional support resources on campus, in the community, by phone, and online.

The module has two course codes because it has been formally approved as a 0-credit course by both the Undergraduate Council and Graduate Council with course codes CONSENT 1A00 and SGS 202, respectively.

For the 2023-24 academic year, CONSENT 1A00 and SGS 202 will not appear on your transcript.

We know that this work is a movement, not a moment, as expressed by #MeToo founder Tarana Burke. While this module is an important step in this work, it must be part of larger efforts in order to achieve a culture of consent. Some of the other work done by SVPRO and the Equity and Inclusion Office (EIO) include:

• Updating the Sexual Violence Policy and Discrimination & Harassment Policy every three years, in consultation with staff, faculty, and students
• Convening the Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Task Force, comprised of staff, faculty, and students, bimonthly through the academic year
• Facilitating trainings and workshops to student leaders, staff, and faculty groups by request
• Facilitating regular webinars on a variety of topics related to consent and healthy masculinity, open to McMaster and the wider community
• Providing case management support to anybody at McMaster who has experienced GBSV
• Working collaboratively with campus partners such as the Student Wellness Centre, Residence Life, Archway, the Student Success Centre, the Black Student Success Centre, Indigenous Student Services, Athletics and Recreation, Student Case Management, the Faculty of Health Sciences Professionalism Office, Employee Labour Relations, and others in prevention and response efforts
• Working collaboratively with community partners such as the Sexual Assault Centre (Hamilton and Area) (SACHA) and the Woman Abuse Working Group
